FAQs

  • The city is under contract with Kimble Recycling & Disposal.  Please follow the blue link for more information on Kimble.

  • You will need to have a petition filled out by the residents in the area that you will be having the party.  Once signed the petition will need to be turned into City Hall where it will need to be approved by the Mayor and Police Chief.

  • The City does not require a fee to have a block party.

  • No, the city cannot recommend any contractors. We do, however, supply our residents with a list of registered contractors. Registered means that a contractor has proven to the city that they have business insurance and have posted a bond in the amount of $15,000. We suggest obtaining at least 3 written estimates. You can find a full list of current registered contractors under "supporting documents" below.

  • Willowick requires a Point of Sale inspection. This inspection requires a sewer dye test, sidewalk and apron inspection and a fire safety inspection. To learn more about the Point of Sale process, please see the Point Of Sale Information at this site or contact the Building Department at 440-516-3000. The full point of sale packet is below under "supporting documents".

  • Almost all home improvements require a Building Permit.  Please see the the information listed below on this site or contact the Building Department at 440-516-3000 for information on permits. Please do not start any work on your property until a permit is secured.

  • Carbon monoxide detectors trigger an alarm based on an accumulation of carbon monoxide over time. Carbon monoxide can harm you if you are exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide in a short period of time, or to lower levels of carbon monoxide over a long period of time. Carbon monoxide detectors require a continuous power supply, so if the power cuts off then the alarm becomes ineffective. Models are available that offer back-up battery power.

  • Don’t ignore the alarm! It is intended to go off before you are experiencing symptoms. If the alarm activates, get all members of the household to fresh air, and ask whether anyone is experiencing any of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning and call 911. The Willowick Fire Department has monitors capable of determining the levels of carbon monoxide in your home and in some cases, the source of the carbon monoxide.  Have appliances or chimneys checked by a professional as soon as possible.

  • Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, invisible gas. Each carbon monoxide molecule is composed of a single carbon atom bonded to a single oxygen atom. Carbon monoxide results from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, such as wood, kerosene, gasoline, charcoal, propane, natural gas, and oil.

  • Carbon monoxide is present in low levels in the air. In the home, it is formed from incomplete combustion from any flame-fueled (i.e., not electric) device, including ranges, ovens, clothes dryers, furnaces, fireplaces, grills, space heaters, vehicles, and water heaters. Furnaces and water heaters may be sources of carbon monoxide, but if they are vented properly the carbon monoxide will escape to the outside. Open flames, such as from ovens and ranges, are the most common source of carbon monoxide. Vehicles are the most common cause of carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Because carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and also because it may be found with warm, rising air, detectors should be placed on a wall about 5 feet above the floor. The detector may be placed on the ceiling. Do not place the detector right next to or over a fireplace or flame-producing appliance. Keep the detector out of the way of pets and children. Each floor needs a separate detector. If you getting a single carbon monoxide detector, place it near the sleeping area and make certain the alarm is loud enough to wake you up.

  • When carbon monoxide is inhaled, it passes from the lungs into the hemoglobin molecules of red blood cells. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin at the same site as and preferentially to oxygen, forming carboxyhemoglobin. Carboxyhemoglobin interferes with the oxygen transport and gas exchange abilities of red blood cells. The result is that the body becomes oxygen-starved, which can result in tissue damage and death. Low levels of carbon monoxide poisoning cause symptoms similar to those of the flu or a cold, including shortness of breath on mild exertion, mild headaches, and nausea. Higher levels of poisoning lead to dizziness, mental confusion, severe headaches, nausea, and fainting on mild exertion. Ultimately, carbon monoxide poisoning can result in unconsciousness, permanent brain damage, and death. Carbon monoxide detectors are set to sound an alarm before the exposure to carbon monoxide would present a hazard to a healthy adult. Babies, children, pregnant women, people with circulatory or respiratory ailments, and the elderly are more sensitive to carbon monoxide than healthy adults.

  • The police department does not have the resources to catch any animals. If a dog at large is vicious or has injured anyone, we will contact the Lake County Dog Warden and attempt to keep a visual of the animal. If the dog is not dangerous and can be caught, it can be taken to a temporary dog kennel at the Service Garage at 31419 Vine St. However, for safety and health reasons, the officers cannot transport the animals themselves.

  • In most cases, as with dogs at large, we cannot trap animals. If the animal poses a risk to people, such as a sick raccoon or skunk, an officer may destroy the animal in a humane manner if there are no risks. Otherwise, we or the Service Department can contact a local pest control company.

  • We recommend that you notify the police department on our non-emergency phone line if your house will be vacant during a vacation. We maintain a log for informational purposes. The dispatcher will ask for the dates involved, any vehicles on the premises, who to contact and who will have a key and any other pertinent information in case there is a problem. A trusted neighbor or family member should also be made aware of your plans. We also ask that people notify us when they return.

  • In 2009, ordinance 351.03 PROHIBITED PARKING OR STANDING PLACES, was revised so that a parked vehicle had to be at least 50 feet from the crosswalk at an intersection and / or 50 feet from a traffic control device such as a stop sign, or traffic light. In general, the average Willowick residential lot is 50 feet wide so a vehicle should be at least one house width distance from these markers.

    Although there are other parking restrictions such as for handicap, firelane, night parking etc. I am posting the general parking prohibitions below so that residents can be aware of them and call the Police Dept. to report violations.

    (a) No person shall stand or park a vehicle, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or to comply with the provisions of this title, or while obeying the directions of a police officer or a traffic-control device, in any of the following places:

    (5) On a crosswalk;

    (6) Within 50 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection;

    (7) Within 50 feet of, and upon the approach to, any flashing beacon, stop sign, or traffic-control device;

All non-emergency and other calls should be made to 440-585-1234.
