We currently are allotted a complement of 22 full time sworn officers. This includes the Chief of Police, 2 Lieutenants, 4 Sergeants, 2 Detectives, 13 patrol officers, a part time court officer, part time Special Detective, and part time IT Officer. Two officer positions were eliminated in the past 5 years through attrition as a result of the economic recession. One of those had been a School Resource Officer that was originally created in 2003 from a COPS grant.
We also have a civilian staff of 8 dispatchers and a records clerk.
A K9 unit was established in 2006 and currently K9 officer Brian O'Toole and his K9 partner, Cal, are assigned to regular patrol duties.
Our Detective Bureau currently has two full-time detectives. Detective Greg Spakes and Detective Chris Olup. Both officers are trained in special investigations, crime scene preservation, evidence collection, narcotics investigations and photography.
The Willowick Police Department is involved in a number of public relation programs. Ptl. Don Slapnicker has taught the DARE program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) in the schools since 2015.
Willowick is part of a 6 city ERT (Emergency Response Team), comprised of SWAT officers and Crisis Negotiators who respond to emergency situations on a mutual aid basis. This unit was begun in Willowick in 1987.
The Police Department has a computer network that utilizes a CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch system that is provided by Sundance Systems Inc.) and a RMS (Records Management System). We have (7) MDTs (Mobile Data Terminals), all of which are in our marked cruisers and tied into our internal network.
